Description of the plant and the fruit :

The scientific name of camu-camu is "Myrciaria Dubia" belongs to the family of the Myrtaceae, like guava, myrtle or niaouli (paper bark tree). It is a riverside tree mainly found in Peru along the Ucayali River and the Amazon River and its affluents. It grows in the Amazonian swamp and floodplains, and the harvest (average of 1 to2 kg per tree) depends on the yearly rainfall. Its roots are deeply submerged in water from which it draws minerals and nutrients.

The camu-camu tree can grow up to 4 m high, with deep roots, smooth branches and spear-shaped and elliptical leaves of 4.5 to 12 cm long. The diameter of the fruit is between 2 and 4 cm; its surface is reddish, shiny and smooth.
